Colonel McNeill presented Sheriff Cathey with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, signed by Governor Roy Cooper, in recognition for his more than 45 years of dedicated public service to his country, his home town, the State of North Carolina and especially the citizens of Union County.

· January 18 at 7:39am · NEWS RELEASE January 18, 2018 For Immediate Release Deputies Disrupt Potential Drug Related Robbery... Two Union County teenagers were arrested Monday afternoon after Sheriff’s Deputies found them outside an Indian Trail residence, armed with a handgun and a stolen AR-15 rifle. Deputies were dispatched to a home in the 5100 block of Chelsey Lane located in the Sandalwood neighborhood shortly after noon Monday.
Concerned citizens alerted police to suspicious activity involving two males wearing “skull” masks seen walking around outside a residence. After a short period of time, the two males left the residence in a dark colored vehicle but returned a short while later. Deputies arrived to investigate and found one of the males armed with a loaded handgun. In addition, deputies located a stolen AR-15 rifle, a ballistic vest and a quantity of marijuana inside the vehicle the two teens were operating.
Deputies, detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the Chelsey Lane residence. Detectives developed probable cause for the issuance of a search warrant for the residence. Once inside, found the home unoccupied but detectives located a stolen handgun, baggies of marijuana, THC extract, and drug paraphernalia. While at the residence, a priority mail package arrived from California addressed to an occupant of the home.
The package contained nearly 450 grams of THC extract. Investigators believe the two teen suspects went to the home prepared to commit a robbery but deputies interrupted their plans thanks to alert citizens. The two teenage suspects, identified as Josue Diego Martinez, age 18, of Marshville and Kevin Manuel Arant-Melchor, age 17, of Monroe face the following charges: Martinez - Carrying a Concealed Weapon Breaking and Entering Possession of Stolen Goods Simple Possession of Schedule VI Arant-Melchor - Breaking and Entering Simple Possession of Schedule VI The next court appearance for Martinez and Arant-Melchor is scheduled for March 13, 2018.
The investigation concerning the contraband seized from the Chelsey Lane residence resulted in the arrest of 21 year old Zackery Keith Phifer. Phifer faces the below charges: Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sale or Deliver a Controlled Substance Possession with Intent to Sale and Deliver Marijuana Simple Possession of Marijuana Possession of Drug Paraphernalia Possession of Stolen Goods Phifer’s next court date is March 6, 2018.

Robert Dean Wilson, age 48, is in custody following a dangerous pursuit with Union County Sheriff’s Deputies yesterday afternoon that began in western Union County and ended south of Indian Trail.
At approximately 4:53 pm, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police alerted deputies about a stolen Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling east on Rea Road, entering Union County. The stolen vehicle, occupied by Wilson and a female passenger, traveled to Newtown Road where deputies attempted a traffic stop. Wilson refused to stop and a pursuit began. Several times during the pursuit, Wilson crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, endangering motorists as well as officers involved in the chase.
In addition, Wilson failed to stop at stop signs as well as a red light. He also left the roadway on more than one occasion, driving through fields in an attempt to get away. Wilson continued to flee and eventually came to the roundabout at Wesley Chapel and Goldmine Road. After clearing the roundabout, deputies used their vehicles to block Wilson’s path, and he pulled into a driveway, where Wilson and the female passenger were taken into custody.
Deputies learned that Wilson had a walking boot on his foot from a recent ankle break and he was arrested but transported to CHS-Union for treatment concerning this injury. He remains in custody at CHS-Union pending further evaluation by medical personnel. The female passenger was released and is not facing charges pertaining to the vehicle chase. Investigators determined the vehicle was stolen from Marshville.
The vehicle theft remains under investigation by Marshville Police. Wilson, whose last known address was in the 5200 block of Old Monroe Road, Indian Trail, NC, faces the following charges resulting from the chase: Resist, Delay and Obstruct Felony Fleeing to Elude Driving while License Revoked Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle Felonious Restraint Possession of Methamphetamines This investigation is active and additional charges are likely.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey praised the efforts of all deputies, law enforcement as well as the dispatchers involved in this pursuit. He commented, “Our deputies acted quickly once they received the information from CMPD. They realized they had to get this vehicle stopped due to the careless and dangerous actions of the driver. The dispatchers and officers did a great job communicating with one another so deputies could be in the right place to safely end this pursuit.

CMPD assets notified deputies about a stolen pickup truck entering Union County on Rea Road.
Deputies located the suspect vehicle and attempted to execute a traffic stop. The driver ref...used to stop and fled from pursuing deputies. The suspect avoided capture for many minutes, sped through stop signs and drove through fields before eventually stopping on Wesley Chapel Road just north of Goldmine Road. No civilians or deputies were injured during the incident. Both occupants of the vehicles were detained once the vehicle was stopped.
The names of the suspects and charges are pending as the investigation is ongoing. The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle driven by the suspects was stolen from Marshville. CMPD received an alert about the stolen vehicle traveling through South Charlotte this afternoon. This alert prompted law enforcement efforts to locate and stop the vehicle. Great work by all deputies involved in the capture of this fleeing felon.
