However, I definitely want to let others know about this hospital that took excellent care of my dog during a very trying time. My small lovable chihuahua mix sadly was viciously attacked a few months ago. I had no clue where to go but I quick found this place online and they said "bring her in".
Immediately upon arrival the ICU techs rushed out to take her back to evaluate her injuries. With her being in critical condition they opted to have emergency surgery that night. This was only the beginning of several surgeries and a three week stay at their facility. Throughout the duration of her stay, we were updated daily, sometimes several times a day by her doctors and ICU techs. Each day we visited and were warmly welcomed by the staff there who we got to know personally.
Even with the doctors alternating throughout the week, they were all extremely knowledgeable about her condition. We put full trust into them. We were constantly informed about everything going on and anything confusing was always explained. Although the final bill was a bit steep, we have no regrets whatsoever having chose this place as you can not put a price on a life. They were able to save my dog and she is currently happy and doing well all things considered.
The staff here did EVERYTHING they possibly could to help my dog and I will be forever grateful for the amazing work that they did and the care that was provided. To anyone looking for a animal hospital to care for their pet, please look no further, the care is top notch. To the doctors/ICU techs, front desk staff... I'll never be able to thank you enough, I truly consider the work you all do miracles.
It's the middle of the night, and your pet is sick. You aren't sure you can wait until the morning and see if your vet has an appointment. What are you going to do? Dogs and Cats is your middle-of-the-night veterinary lifesaver. Their team of vets and techs works 24/7 to keep your pets healthy and alive. Our 9-year-old cat has had two urinary obstructions (an issue with male cats no one warned us about), which can be an enormous medical emergency.
If you ever see your cat straining or unable to urinate, go straight to the vet! We knew we needed him seen right away, so we called Dogs and Cats (if you call ahead, they can get ready for you) and drove over in the wee hours. Everyone we've met there has been compassionate, patient, and helpful. They are communicative and give you opportunities to ask questions - and answer them honestly. They offer options and give you time to consider them.
If your pet is an inpatient, they call regularly and welcome your calls anytime. They also have visiting hours everyday, so you can see your pet and give them some comfort. This isn't cheap, but when it's a life or death emergency, you want the best odds of success. I hope I never have to go back to Dogs and Cats, but I'm glad they're there if I need them. I have visited this practice twice. The first appointment my dog and I had was with the radiologist, Dr.
Tibbs. We were referred to her for an ultrasound after my dog had stopped eating and he had been to two other vets but they had trouble making a diagnosis. She was able to tell us that my dog had some growths on his spleen and they were likely cancerous lymphoma growths. Sad news but at least we finally had an answer! She was very kind and offered some options that I could review with my dogs primary veterinarian.
There was no pressure to make a snap decision....just information. Prior to even getting to that point I will say that the check in process was quick and easy and the vet tech that we met with at first was very nice and answered all of my questions. The fee for the ultrasound was a bit higher than other quotes I had received elsewhere but we finally had a diagnosis so I was happy to spend the money.
Our second visit was a sad one but the staff treated my partner and I with the utmost compassion and kindness. After my dogs lymphoma diagnosis and trying treatment with our primary vet, my dogs condition did not get any better. It was no ones fault as his condition was advanced at this point. We arranged to lay him to rest at home with the aid of a house call vet (not affiliated with D&C). We were able to bring my dog back here for cremation, which was good because my primary vet's office was closed during the hours in which my dog was put to sleep at home.
I was very distraught when bringing him in as I had had my dog for twelve years and having no children, this dog was like my son. The ladies on staff that night were extremely kind and compassionate. The rate was reasonable, especially because in addition to my dogs ashes I was given a clay mold of his paw with his name on it. I was not expecting this extra memento. It was especially meaningful to me because when we laid my dog to rest at home I had tried to take several impressions of his paw myself and none of them came out as good as the one D&C gave me.
My overall impression of this practice is that they are kind and skilled. I would use them again in the future for specialized needs or an emergency situation. Friendly staff, always make sure to keep us informed and take great care of our puppy. They always let us know prices and different options, the facility it clean, and the service is fast. Thank you :) My dog was diagnosed with a condition called Perinal Hernia.
I was referred from a Vet that is located in Odenton. I was told that they didn't perform that type of surgery and that he should be referred to a Board Certified Vet. Which brings me to Dogs and Cats. Dr. Garnett was his attending Dr. I must say he is Excellent!! The surgery was a Success. He notified us before and after surgery. He kept us updated on his status. I have a Bishon Frise. He was able to get that e collar off his neck while l was at work and l panicked because you know the purpose of the collar is to stop them from licking.
I wanted to make sure everything was still intact. So l immediately called the office and the nurse was able to get him seen immediately before the Dr. Had his scheduled surgery. He checked him over and did the proper exam and stated everything was still intact. Thank god!! He has literally in my book saved my little furry baby's life. I can't express the gratitude l have for this. The staff was also helpful including the front desk.
I didn't give it five stars because one day during the weekend. I called and needed to speak with a Tech and was told by the lady at the front desk that they had an emergency. I left a message with my number and no one called me back. So l understand the emergency situation but would have appreciated the return call at some point during that day and it never happened The guy that sit at the front has been helpful as well and sorry l didn't get his name.
I do know he remembered Jake when he saw him because he is a memorable one with his barking. He did state that they check out the Yelp reviews reviews. So Thank you so much!! I would definitely recommended this hospital just be prepared to pay a pretty price that you probably won't think is actually pretty. If you are able. After all it is for your pets sake. They do deserve the best. It's typically never a good time when you have to make a trip to the emergency vet.
However, Dogs and Cats has made my pet emergencies a tolerable experience. I first came here years ago when my 3 month old puppy choked on some of his kibble and had to be rushed to his regular vet. They were able to save him, but he required an overnight stay to ensure that his oxygen levels were okay. Unfortunately, our regular vet does not provide overnight care, so they directed us to Dogs and Cats.
After two nights in an oxygen tent (and $$$$), our baby was as good as new. He just celebrated his 4th birthday last month, and I have to give credit to his regular vet and D&C for saving his life! Last week, I decided to give my Persian cat a haircut and accidentally nicked his skin. Of course, it was past his regular vet's hours and looked like it needed emergency care. I called Dogs and Cats before arriving and they agreed that he should be seen, especially due to his age (he's 19!).
The ladies at the front desk were welcoming and we were immediately taken to triage. The friendly vet assessed him and took him to the back for care. Yes, the wait was long (a few hours), but it's an EMERGENCY vet. There was another family there whose poor baby was in a tragic accident and unfortunately did not make it. Of course, that issue was more critical than a cat cut. Like I said earlier, Dogs and Cats dropped everything years ago when we brought in our puppy for his emergency oxygen treatment.
They took him back right away to get him assessed and hooked up to the proper machines. Overall, I was very pleased with my experiences. By the end of the night, my phone was at less than 20% and the kind lady at the front desk (I wish I got her name!) offered me a phone charger. I was also offered coffee or water while I waited. It's the little things that make you feel like you and your pet are being taken care of! Thanks, Dogs and Cats! This place is amazing and has been a true light of support and comfort with our pets' health over the years.
They are not reasonably priced but definitely affordable when you take into account the level of care. I hope they never change their standards. It really is about your surgeon and not the establishment overall, but some people may get a little turned off with regards to price. I felt my surgeon did a fine job explaining the issues plaguing my little friend, but when it came to cost, I was a little confused.
I was also concerned for his age (my chi is 14 years old). In a nutshell-dog had perianal gland tumours which then turned into he also has hernias, which also turned into-he needs to be neutered because his testosterone levels effect the outcome. My surgeon aborted on one side because his pressure went low. I am glad they did it, but the refund issue concerned me. They itemized the pricing, but when aborting the hernia repair on one side, the numbers didn't really jive on the refund.
I am glad my dog is alive and well and made a very good recovery, so it was nothing major to me, but I felt I should mention it-so you would not be surprised. Additionally-if something happens to your animal mid-surgery, to resuscitate is an extra $1k+. I thought that would be included, but not so. I told them DNR because I cant tell what would happen either way. Obviously, there's no object on how much you love your pet.
Let me tell you how awful it is to know that you need to contact an emergency vet. But, the staff at Dogs and Cats came through to save my Duchie. She required emergency eye surgery. Dogs and Cats was the closest thing open at night. The Doctor looked at Duchess first, and provided two options, both were explained in detail. The emergency surgery was done that night. The staff were great, and explained how to care for her, what to expect, and how to follow up.
They were extremely helpful and offered to answer any questions at that time, and also going forward. Is it overpriced? In my opinion, for an emergency, nope. Emergencies are just that, emergencies. The hope is that they don't occur often. Despite the great care Duchess received, I hope to never return here for an emergency again, my heart can't take it! Regardless, an awful experience was made a wee bit better with their care and concern.
The Dog and Cat Hospital provided courteous and professional service to our family during a very difficult time. Dr. Nelson and her staff, notably Aaron provided excellent care. Sadly, despite their efforts we had two pets pass away this year. Our Katie is at peace. They handled the passing of our pets in a compassionate and dignified manner and we will be forever grateful. I found the prices to be fair for the area given that they provide 24hr emergency care.
These people truly care about the pets they treat. My vet referenced me here because my aussie shepherd ended up needing emergency surgery. It was a terrible, emotional rollercoaster ride for me but they comforted me the through out the whole process. Dr.Kelly and Dr. Garnett wasted no time and saved his life! I was kept updated at all times and I am so grateful for them. And of course the technicians were angels for the patience they had for his bad diarrhea by washing him and treating him at all hours of the day.
Thank you for your amazing services. On Saturday night, my husband and I were alarmed when he found what he thought was a worm sticking out of our little Beagle's back. Not wanting to wait for the next morning for Banfield Hospital to open, we decided to take Pebbles to this facility. We had been here once before a while back and they took really good care of her. We were seen within a few minutes, someone came out and looked at it and thought it was a skin tag, but weren't sure.
We were hoping that's all it was. They took her to the back and within 10 minutes, the doctor came out and said that it just looked like something that had gotten embedded on her back (she pulled it out) and didn't think it was anything to worry about since Pebbles looked otherwise healthy. I told the doctor at that time that my husband and I have officially become one of those paranoid pet parents.
we were relieved that's all it was. Even though it ended up being something silly, the staff never made us feel stupid. They were very kind. They gave us the piece that they took out of her back and sent us on our way. I want to thank the whole staff for being super friendly and professional. We will not hesitate to bring our dog back here if she should need something. it turned out to be nothing this time, but better safe than sorry.
Waited 3.5 hours for my dog to be seen on a Wednesday night. I wasn't allowed to even go back and check on him or sit with him which I thought was strange. Discharge process took 2 hours. Overall unpleasant experience wouldn't come back unless you want to wait for hours. LONG story short, they killed my cat and did NOTHING about it. We had a terrible experience. We were referred here by our regular vet because of a large tumor.
At first they couldn't see us for a week, then they called to say the vet had looked at the tests and we should bring our dog right away for surgery. When we got there, the Dr had not reviewed the tests and didn't even have them all. She gave us no more information than our original vet. They tried to convince us to go through with surgery even though our dog would likely live only one more month, half of that would be recovery time.
She told us what she thought without backing it up with research findings. When we tried to leave they clearly didn't want to give us our dog, they wanted her to stay overnight even though they could offer no viable treatment. The Dr kept trying to get us back in the room to talk more even after multiple times we said we wanted to go. All in all a painful experience and emotional misery. I was in a panic when I saw that my dog had eaten a childproof box of rat poison I had in the basement.
I couldn't figure why she kept throwing up and then I saw what she was hiding in her doggie bed and freaked out!! I rushed her here and the took her right away into the emergency room. They we in touch with me the entire time, spoke to me every 20 minutes and made sure I was a ware of every single test that they were going to get her. I didn't care I let them do everything. About 7 hours later and tons of fluids she ran out like nothing ever happened, lol of course! She was fine and I was super happy! Great staff, facility, and doctors, I'd come back any day! Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Overall my experience was a positive one and they took great care of my pup who was in a bad situation. They seemed genuinely concerned for his well being and I would comeback if needed. I was an emergency/critical care veterinary technician for a decade so perhaps my review is biased but here goes: I brought my 16 year-old cat to Dogs and Cats after he vomited a couple of times and seemed dazed.
It was of course the weekend and his regular veterinarian was closed. I brought him to the clinic around 9PM. After speaking with the receptionist a tech came out to speak with me for a moment but did not lay hands on my cat. This is NOT how triage is done. There was a couple with a puppy sitting in the waiting room waiting to check out and the receptionist made a comment about how it was a slow night as I waited.
I was then moved to a room. Then I waited. And waited. And my cat vomited 3 more times and seemed again very dazed and wobbly. At that time (I had been there over an hour) I went to the receptionist and asked that my cat either be taken to the back or a doctor come in soon. She said okay and seemed kind of shocked that I was still waiting at that point. Another 10 minutes later and a tech came in, took his temp (which was 98 degrees which is technically low for a cat) and told me it was normal and left the room.
A doctor finally came in after I had been there over 90 minutes. Of course I understand the triage system and the most urgent come before less serious patients but 1) there was noone before me 2) the tech said that the doctors were finishing rounds when she was in the room. Rounds do not preclude looking at a 16 year old cat who has vomited over a half dozen times in 2 hours with a low temp (shock, anyone?), especially when the owner used to be a vet tech and has identified some indicators that it could be a vascular event, hypoglycemia, etc.
In the end my cat was hospitalized for a few days and his regular veterinarian actually figured out what was going on with him. There is only one veterinarian that is boarded in emergency medicine (DACVECC) and most of the doctors that work in emergency have only done the 4 years of vet school and have not completed a residency in emergency. I don't know if that is why things seem kind of wonky and slow but I know that my old clinic (all were either DACVECC or residents in emergency) would have never stood for a 16 year-old to be left in a room under such symptoms.
I do think it is misleading to have an emergency department with the majority of doctors not being board certified. The doctor that I ended up seeing was nice and competent but the process of getting to see her is the part with which I am most upset. The clinic also does not do military discounts which most every other specialty clinic offers (I have a dog that does pt at VOSM and a cat that sees a cardiologist at CVCA) and I find that rather odd and disappointing as well.
My cat was referred here by my regular vet for a sonogram. My GPS was on the fritz but I called and the front desk staff was great in giving me turn by turn directions to the clinic. The outside was not what I expected but it's right beside the Post Office which may be an easier landmark to look out for. I only visited once but I thought Dr. B was kind and sensitive when sharing a difficult prognosis for my pet.
After calling around to other emergency vets I thought the experience was as pleasant as it could be and appreciated the professional and kind staff. It is with a heavy heart I post that our kitty (who I referenced in my first review) developed FIP. FIP is a disease that strikes at the most vulnerable - in this case a kitten. FIP is fatal - the best you can do is to try to alleviate the suffering as long as possible.
Unfortunately he had fluid around his heart which made it difficult to breathe and he started having neurological problems and finally, one day, we knew it was time. This is the hardest decision, probably one of the very hardest, I've ever had to make in my life. From when we brought him in through to when we picked up his ashes the staff were more than top notch. They were compassionate, loving, and supportive.
To demonstrate how supportive and compassionate they are we received a sympathy card and it was signed by the doctor's who treated Henry and the one who helped us end his suffering. From my regular vet I got a card just signed the hospital. To get something that staff hand penned reflecting their understanding of the loss of my beloved kitty - that was something special. When it came time to pick up his ashes the gentleman at the desk had everything ready to to when I came in the door.
Before I gave him our name - and I remarked on it. He said I saw you coming and didn't want you to wait in the waiting room....that's all you can ask folks. My highest recommendation for this service.
