Ear-tipping (also known as ear notch) is an effective and universally accepted method to identify a spayed or neutered and vaccinated community cat.
This is done while the cat is anesthetized for spay/neuter and healing is rapid. The ear tip helps the community quickly identify that the cat is sterilized (cannot reproduce). It is difficult to get close to feral cats, and therefore the identification must be visible from a distance. Community cat...s may interact with a variety of caregivers, veterinarians, and animal control personnel during their lives and so immediate visual identification is necessary to prevent an unnecessary second trapping and surgery.

There hav...e been multiple confirmed cases of Distemper in San Angelo. These cases have ties back to the animal shelter. It's an unfortunate situation that is caused by dogs not being vaccinated, dumped by irresponsible pet owners and spreading this horrible disease in public places as well as local shelters and rescues. Please be proactive and get your pets vaccinated properly and be aware that public settings could be contaminated.
Simply vaccinating your puppies the recommended 4 times as well as keeping up with annual vaccinations for adult dogs, can prevent the spread of this fatal disease. We highly suggest that unvaccinated puppies stay within your home and do not venture into public settings until receiving the proper vetting. Cats that are dumped suffer because stabilized colony cats will force them out of their territory. Abandoned/dumped cats and kittens are attacked, injured, not allowed to eat, or chased off from the territory only to get run over in our city streets. ... - PLEASE educate others that abandoning/dumping a cat or dog is cruel and illegal. - PLEASE educate others that abandoned/dumped cats and dogs alike endure a worse fate than being euthanized.
- PLEASE encourage people considering dumping a cat/dog to contact and work with a rescue or our city shelter.
