Volunteer Requirements Must be at least 18 years old Must attend an interview, orientation and training Agree to make a 3 month commitment to volunteer at the shelter Volunteer for a minimum of 8 hours per month In-Shelter Volunteers Volunteers play an important part in providing a positive experience for animals temporarily housed at the Plano Animal Shelter and citizens interested in adopting.
There are opportunities to work both directly and indirectly with animals. Volunteers serve as greeters, administrative assistants, photographers, cat or dog room attendants, kennel attendants, dog exercisers and socializers, and laundry attendants. Foster Volunteers Volunteers are always needed to open their hearts and homes on a temporary basis for dogs and cats of all ages as they grow, heal, socialize and adjust behaviorally in preparation to finding their forever home.
Fostering pets that have temporary medical needs or are too young to be adopted gives them the chance to grow stronger and healthier before they make their adoption floor debut. The care and socialization given during this time greatly increases cats and dog’s chances for adoption. Offsite & Event Volunteers Volunteers are needed to assist with off-site activities that promote the care and adoption of shelter animals at adoption, microchipping and spay/neuter events throughout Plano.
Group and One-Time Volunteers Volunteer groups of 5-8 people are needed throughout the year to help with basic shelter duties and special projects. This is a great opportunity for corporate, faith-based/civic and school groups (18+) to spend a few hours helping around the shelter. Volunteers complete building-upkeep projects such as sorting, organizing, cleaning and laundry. Other Opportunities If you would like provide additional support, the Plano Animal Shelter always appreciates your donations of much needed supplies for the shelter and animals.
Host a supply drive with your friends, family and coworkers using this wish list for our current needs. All ages are welcome to participate. From a jungle of rain-washed pines and junipers spearing the new blueness with the Florida sky, ran a little, tawny-haired boy. His bare toes, extending from his overalled legs, crackled from the fallen palmettos. He leaped into your air, flinging his arms toward a flock of white doves circling over him.
Volunteer Opportunities Do you love spending time with animals? If so, we need you! There are multiple ways to get involved in a volunteer capacity at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Volunteer opportunities include: Dog Walker: Dog walking volunteers work one-on-one with dogs and puppies, taking them outside for exercise and training, and giving them all the love they need to thrive in the unusual atmosphere.
The shelter can be a noisy and stressful place for dogs who have been lost or given up by their owners. Interaction with people is their best therapy. Cat Cuddler: Cat Cuddlers hold, pet, interact and brush the shelter’s felines. This allows the cats to relax in the shelter where there may be a number of strange smells and noises. The Cat Cuddler Program allows volunteers to interact with kittens and cats to help alleviate the animal's stress, thereby enabling the cat to become more friendly and calm when approached by a potential adopter.
Wish List Volunteer: To care for the animals served by the Forsyth County Animal Shelter, the shelter needs many supplies. Please consider holding a “drive” for the shelter to promote our wish list. This could even be done at home through social media! Foster Care Volunteer: The Forsyth County Animal shelter places special needs animals into warm nurturing environments that can provide consistent care.
Volunteers are needed for not quite adoptable (too young, too old, or unsocialized) animals in foster homes until they can be placed for adoption. Foster care volunteers must be 18 years old and a home check is required. Event Help: Volunteers are needed to represent the Forsyth County Animal Shelter at special events. Volunteers may be required to assist with check-in, provide directions, set-up and/or clean-up and any other special needs (such as item sales).
Our Special Events Volunteers must have the ability to meet deadlines and be flexible with job assignments. Photographer: Volunteers are needed to take pictures and shoot videos of our adoptable animals on a weekly basis for the adoption section of our Web site. Groomer: Volunteers groom shelter dogs to create quality bonding time between themselves and the dogs, thus increasing a dog's adoptability.
Dogs often come to the shelter matted and dirty. The special attention from a grooming volunteer enables the dog’s true personality to shine through and increases their chance of being adopted. Volunteer General Requirements: 1. You must provide proof of medical insurance. 2. Forsyth County Animal Shelter highly recommends volunteers be up-to-date on tetanus vaccination, however this is not a requirement.
3. You must be 18 years of age to volunteer independently in the shelter. Those who are age 17 are also permitted to volunteer independently in the shelter, but may be restricted to certain tasks. 4. You must be able to donate at least 8 hours per month for at least 6 months. 5. All volunteers are subject to a 16-hour probation. 6. Must have Internet access and valid email address as most communication, updates and scheduling will be done online.
